Agent: Murine Cytomegalovirus (MCMV)

Murine cytomegalovirus is a herpesvirus specific for mice. It does not infect humans or other animals.

Potential Hazard: None to humans Transmission to other mice occurs through the saliva and the placenta and infection is life-long. Clinical signs are usually absent in mice. Infection with this virus of mice on immunologic or infectious disease studies could be complicated. Consequently, these mice are housed under BSL2 conditions to protect other mice from them.

Recommended Precautions: Animal biosafety level 2 procedures (DAR SOP 400-3) are sufficient to contain this virus and protect other mice from exposure.
